[Asha] looked down the street at the massive towers that lit up the
landscape with their digital glow. "Come. Walk with me," she said, even as
she started down the sidewalk.
Dot walked, her head bowed downward, though she watched Asha's feet for
direction.
Though their speed was only a fraction of those around them, the other
passersby gave them a wide berth as Asha led them onward. "You looked a
bit let down as you came through the port. What is it?"
"Hmm? Oh," Dot muttered in her usual way, "I was just... it just...
disappeared. I expected more... I think I can go a little faster, if I
try."
Dot looked at Asha and stopped. "I have to try something. You might need
to distract Suhuy." With great concentration Dot moved her arm... her real
arm, and within moments had what she needed.
As Dot's concentration split, the Ether seemed to almost fragment
momentarily, but came back into focus as she did.
"I can't switch as easily as you can right now," Asha said. "And as soon as
you are jacked in, you won't be able to either. So I hope that distracting
Suhuy wasn't a necessity to what you did."
"And I know you can go faster," Asha continued, her voice full of confidence
in her charge. "Even through the induction link, you did more than 90% of
the users that are passing us would ever dream of being able to do. You
showed an instinctive understanding of the underlying concepts that is
positively amazing." In her excitement, she had walked a bit ahead of Dot,
and realizing it, slowed her pace a bit, turning to face her companion.
"You've proven something that I've not been able to get Rook to see... By
not relying on the capabilities of the programs you have in your terminal,
you were able to adapt on the fly." She laughed, her voice even more like
the tinkling of bells in this vitual environment. "Rook said I was an
aberration, but I told him that it was because I wasn't constrained by a
lifetime of using this interface... But my connection is corrupted. I give
off a signal that can be traced, and so far, haven't been able to mask it.
You, on the other hand, will have a traditional interface." She shook her
head, her hair giving off a rainbow of colours as it waved in the ethereal
wind. "You don't understand now... But you will soon."
"So what was it that you needed?" she finished, looking at Dot askew.
