Shouts over the hill gave wings to their flight as the trench grew closer.
But even as they began to be able to make out the details of the trench, a
flash of light caught Dot's attention.  Possibly binoculars- or a weapon
scope- but which, she was not sure.  The fact that the sky was not abuzz
with tracers was a positive sign, but more than that was not immediately
evident.

   Regardless of the flash, Dot pressed on, toward the trench.  From it she
felt she might be able to find the source of the light.  She didn't mind
where Suhuy was going, but hoped he would be nearby.
