The small creature took Heath's hand and fairly dragged him toward the
voice. Around the corner she pulled him, and Heath came face-to-face
with not another creature like her, but a regular man. Well, regular
for this place, anyway.
He was average height and a little portly, with a dark mustache that
merged into mutton chops on the sides of his face--very stylish, if
you happened to be from Victorian London. He was dressed impeccably
from his waistcoat and jacket--complete with a gold watch hanging from
a chain--past his pinstriped pants and down to the spats on his shoes.
He looked surprised at what Berry had managed to capture, but regained
his composure quickly. "Berry, I sent you for the morning paper and
you came back instead with a young man. Can you explain this, please?"
Berry hung her head, embarrassed. "Oh, Master, I was on my way to get
your paper and I saw him looking around confused. He was lost! I said
to myself. Now what should I do about this? I thought about the errand
that you had entrusted me with and I very much wanted to fulfill my
responsibility to my Master and my great-aunt Holly told me once that
I should always--"
"Berry..." the man interrupted calmly. "Skip the ruminations and
introspection and get to the point."
"Oh, I'm sorry Master!" Berry bit her lip in consternation. She turned
to look at Heath, then back to the man. "I offered to help the young
man who was lost to find the lobby that smells of floo powder and
shoes because that's where he wanted to go and that's also where I was
going to get Master's paper and I thought I could do both at the same
time for Master says that we should help our fellow man, yes, and this
seemed like the perfect opportunity to do both and I thought Master
would be so proud of me, but Master called before I could finish!"
Berry looked up at the man beseechingly.
The man raised his eyebrows and turned to Heath. "Please allow me to
introduce myself. I am Professor Giles, teacher of Defense of the Dark
Arts at the Hogwarts School of Magic. You've already met my house elf,
Berry."
Professor Giles held his hand out to Heath to shake.
"Are you indeed lost?" he asked.
